Legendary French actress and animal activist Brigitte Bardot is among the masses trying to save Lasah, a wild-born Malaysian elephant who has suffered in zoos, tourism, and entertainment for more than 25 years before working at a logging camp where he is now in Langkawi.

“I respectfully ask the Malaysian government to retire Lasah to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary where he can live as a free elephant without fear of abuse and exploitation. This is what Lasah deserves and the gesture of compassion everyone expects from the Malaysian government,” Bardot wrote in a letter yesterday that was directed to Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Datuk Serii Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

A new Care 2 petition is now circulating urging for 37-year-old Lasah to be released to the Sanctuary as well.

According to the petition, Lasah was captured and taken into captivity when he was a baby and exploited for entertainment.

Eleven years ago, he was sent to the popular Malaysian tourist island, Langkawi, and since then has been used by the profit-making Langkawi Elephant Adventures (LEA) for elephant rides. Lasah has lived all alone, which is devastating for social animals like elephants.

In July of last year, activists exposed photos of Lasah chained on all four legs behind public eyes during LEA’s closing hours.

In March 2017, eight months after the campaign for Lasah started, the Malaysian environment ministry said that Lasah was chained on two feet when not being exploited for tourist’s money.

Lasah has suffered enough! This abuse must stop now!

People are encouraged to sign the petition to send Lasah to the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary HERE!
